Concrete

Anonymous
Concrete Poem

As  cosmetologist I chose this poem because the words and structure are perfect for what we go through, what we see, and what we do.

The poem is in the shape of a pair of shears.

I would use this in literature. I would use this poem for 5th grade and have them make their own concrete poem.

THREE LITTLE PIGS
Written and illustrated by David Wiener
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2001
32 pages
Traditional Literature

This book starts with three pigs and a wolf ready to blow their houses down. Does this particular story follow the pattern of the three little pigs or does it change in the end.

The illustrations are darker and have more shadows. The lines are straight with very little curves here and there.

I would use this story in science for second grade and let the children make a timeline.this would be good for the children to understand and follow sequence of events.

Remember

nine, ten
Nora Raleigh Baskin
208 pages
Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2017
Historical Fiction

This book is on the tragedy of 9/11. This story travels through the time of this tragedy about the worst  disaster that happened in 2001.
There are no pictures in the book, however the cover is a picture of a bright blue sky with people staring up looking at a plane in the air.
I would use this book in Social Studies for 6th grade in remembrance of the fallen towers. I would let them go over this and come up with a way to remember the tragedy. This gives them a chance to be more aware of the dangers the U.S. has gone through as well as over come.

Curly, Curly...

Hair Like Mine
By LaTisha M. Perry
Illustrated by Be a Jackson
G Publishing-2015
32 Pages
Realistic Fiction

Her hair isn't like everyone else's and she isn't happy about it. However, this easy flowing book helps the little girl fall in love with hair like hers💕

The illustrations in this book are detailed, you can see every curl in the little girls hair! The colors are softened to give a more feminine feel. The lines are mostly straight with curves here and there.

I would use this book in science in an older grade like 6th and talk about the different genes that come from which parent. Then, let them learn about the recessive and dominant genes and how the children get each one. We may even touch base on the DNA strands!

Hidden Figures
Margot Lee Shetterly
Harper Collins, 2018
40 Pages
Non-Fiction

This book is about the true story of four different African women and the space race.
The illustrations include bright colors of clothing for the characters. While looking at the cover, the background is the moon and stars.
I would use this book in social studies with 5th graders. I would have them right down a summary using pictures to create the story.
