Ruby Bridges lived a rough life at first. She didn't get to go to school where she wanted and didn't get a choice in where she ate dinner most of the time, due to the color of her skin. She was looked over and many people where ugly to her because she had the chance to go to school in a white only school. Ruby was the first girl to integrate the school system, even though it was a big step, she was an even bigger person.
The illustration in this book are photographs of people protesting and of ruby playing with the children at her new "white" school. This book also has little text boxes where the words are place to separate the words and pictures.
I have choses second grade and Social Studies as my content area. The kids would have to Identify rights and responsibilities of citizens within the family, classroom, school, and community. Then we would continue by talking about how civil rights have changed over the years. This would be a great book to teach children how important equality is.
